Amanita muscaria Amigurumi

The name of this little mushroom is Amanita Muscaria- I think it makes a cute little amigurumi for sure. True in the wild this is poisonous, though rarely deadly 😉 Still working on the warm, winter project to accompany the blue crab from last week. More amigurumi joy to come. #mushrooms #amigurumi share the joy. Love see comments, likes, posts. Be well!

Amigurumi Banned Book Library 2022

Sorry it took so long to complete these. I was a bit ambitious to try and complete a new one each day AND take care of the rest of my life 🙂 The first three books in my Amigurumi Library have been joined by Catcher in the Rye, Captain Underpants and The Color Purple. The Color Purple, by Alice Walker was the first book I read as a teenager where I knew it was banned by some schools and libraries. My parents sent me to a school where I was educated not programed, thank you. And thank you to the teachers who read it with me and others, not turning away for the violent or uncomfortable parts but finding needed meaning and understanding. Even as a young person I knew that the book was fiction, but that the experiences were real for many people, and it moved me deeply. After 20 years as a social work and child and family counselor I can only say that it may have been one of the things that set me on a path to listen to those who society would not hear, and advocate for the rights of those people. A healthy society does not ban books, it uses books to shed light on the issues that most need to be revealed. In order to address those issues, and make our world better for people as a whole not just some. Read banned books, and share the amigurumi joy. As always I would enjoy hearing any comments and please feel free to contact me.

More Banned Books-Amigurumi Style

The next book in my Amigurumi Banned Book collection is Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe. This books very existence is necessary for many reasons, not the least of which according to Kobabe “The words available failed to describe the experience (of being non-binary).” -NYT 5/5/2022 When Kobabe began publishing black and white comics that would become the memoir and posting them online “‘People started responding with things like, ‘I had no idea anyone else felt this way, I didn’t even know that there were words for this’,” -NYT 5/5/2022. As a child and family counselor with nearly 20 years of experience I am painfully aware of the need for young people especially to find the right language and be able to communicate with others including their own families. Without that language, and that communication, harm and pain often fester. Banning any book, especially one that can bring language and understanding where it is lacking is just wrong.

Life and Art-I READ BAnned books

This is banned Book Week, September 18th-24th, and I was inspired to side track a project I have coming that involves a little blue creature and some cute slippers. Been wanting to make these and finally figured out how. Read books, don’t ban books. Books unite us, and if something makes you uncomfortable ask why don’t deny the reality of it, or of someone else’s beliefs or experiences. I’ll be putting up a different book each day this week. As always, sharing the amigurumi joy, love to hear from you. Any ideas for other titles? #ireadbannedbooks #booklover @bannedbooksweek.org

Amigurumi Projects and More

The Amigurumi Dumplings were actually inspired when I finished this scarf. The color of the yarn spoke to me for the color of the dumplings. Also the double crochet stitch made multiple times in a single spot creates the ruffle edge on the dumplings. While 3 double crochet stitches, 2 chain stitiches , then 3 more double crochets is what creates a lace-like pattern in the scarf. Not as hard as it sounds for the scarf and I am already started on my holiday gifts.

busy Saturday-Have Yarn will crochet

I love that mint colored yarn and so I just kept going and created an ear warmer. Pretty simple pattern and worked up very fast. Welcome any comments, questions or suggestions. I won’t wait so long to post up my amigurumi joy and adventures from here on out. (Funny that the black background makes that whip cream look pink rather than white, still super fun and super kawaii!)
